Support the McCarren Park Dog Run Association

| |

Williamsburg dog owners should be glad they now have someone on their side. The McCarren Park Dog Run Association is a New York Council of Dog Owners member whose goal is to improve and maintain the McCarren Park Dog Run.

They did what many thought would never happen. They fixed the small dog run gate latch so small dogs can enjoy being off leash without the risk of getting hurt by larger dogs at play. They also have great literature designed to educate the public on dog run etiquette .

With the expected population boom brought on by a hot condo market the dog population will explode as well. The McCarren Dog Run Association is just what Williamsburg needs!

When you visit the McCarren Park Dog Run this weekend save your coffee money. Why? Cause you're gonna donate it to the organization. They have a table set up with FREE fresh brewed coffee! A buck or two for your pup and you to enjoy the dog run. Thank the few who make it happen.

Our lovely Southside Pit, Peru, moved back to Arizona for a little while. We'll miss her bunches and we took a last photoshoot by the east River before her departure.

What Are Those Little Yellow Signs in Your Park or Street?

So I am sure you alll have seen the little yellow signs near trees in your hood. The Parks Department is fighting an uphill battle against the Asian Longhorn Beetle which can potentially destroy all of our limited vegetation here in the concrete jungle. They are agressively treating healthy trees and cutting down infested ones.

They are using a chemical called imidacloprid It is a common pesticide and an ingredient used in the Advantage flea/tick repellent according to a worker who was injecting the chemical into the soil of a tree in McGorlick Park. I confirmed that statement with the Parks Dept. who set up an Asian Longhorned Beetle Hotline for city residents to report sightings and get info on the pest. As the sign states it is best to keep your pets and children away from treated areas for 24 hours.

The most common application is the injection treatment which essentially takes a giant hypodermic needle of sorts and shoots the earth with this pesticide. depending on the tree and other factors they may inject directly into the trunk or actually drench the soil. These methods are not preferred and only applied when certain factors call for it.

So that's the Poop on that!

Wheels in the Sky...

I recently acquired a 2001 Cushman Truckster to help me get around in a more efficient manner. You may recognize the vehicle as the so-called "meter maid" tripod the police drive around.

Well it is and it has a new assignment. This 3 wheeled automatic scooter will be refurbished, given a paint job and start transporting this walker around the hood.

Judge rules in favor of off-leash dog hours

Dogs across the city had reason to unleash a bark of victory Thursday

A Queens judge's ruling preserved the rights of dog owners to let their pets run off-leash in certain areas of city parks. Queens Supreme Court Judge Peter J. Kelly ruled against a civic group seeking to end the Parks Department's unofficial policy allowing off-leash exercise between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m.
